Racklabs Tech Talk: MapReduce vs SQL

February 4th, 2008 Mailtrust

Posted by Bill Boebel, CTO, Mailtrust

Update: This event has been moved to Monday, February 25.

The team in our Mailtrust office in Blacksburg, VA will be hosting a presentation on MapReduce vs SQL on Monday, February 25. This Racklabs event is open to the public.

Details:

At Mailtrust, we deal with large datasets everyday and we have a lot of experience with traditional methods of scaling systems. Recently, the MapReduce paradigm has gained significant traction with developers that have extreme data processing workloads. As mentioned in the previous post, a Mailtrust team utilized the Hadoop MapReduce implementation to build a scalable system that processes hundreds of gigabytes of data per day. To help the local development community understand the strengths and weaknesses of this new paradigm when compared to traditional relational databases, we will be hosting a tech talk titled “MapReduce vs SQL” at 6:00pm on February 25th at our Blacksburg VA office. The talk will use examples from Mailtrust’s systems, and should be stimulating for anyone interested in distributed computing or large datasets.

Location: Mailtrust, 755 University City Blvd. For those coming from the Virginia Tech campus, take the Tom’s Creek B bus to the first University City Blvd stop. The bus runs every 10 minutes.

If you are interested in attending, please email mapreduce@mailtrust.com to RSVP in order to ensure that we buy enough pizza :)
